The lead role of Marnie is a good challenge as to start with, the audience has to sympathize with her even though her actions are not all that nice. She is hiding a secret - how her sister lost her sight - which she hates herself for. Her parents are somewhat neglectful of her, often favoring Jasmine. Marnie has a full arc that ends with her redemption as she is willing to sacrifice everything to save her sister.
The first scene speaks to the initial challenge of somehow remaining likable, but at the same time devastating her sister with some utterly cruel remarks, which she then regrets.
The second scene is the end of the arc, as she tries to convince Joe not to murder her sister, where she has to both convince a killer not to kill, and show her sister that she won't let it happen. To make it worse, Marnie is a diabetic, and she is slowly running out of energy.
The second main role, that of Jasmine 'JJ' has one huge challenge, the script starts with her being able to see, but an accident blinds her. The main story is set 2 years later. Despite that, she can be very tough, although it's a huge drain on her willpower, leaving her drained and emotional. She was a painter before she lot her sight. Her parents definitely favor her over Marnie.
The first scene speaks to her relationship with her sister Marnie, who she is worried about, but she doesn't have the full story, Marnie blames herself for Jasmine (who calls herself JJ) losing her sight. The big shift is JJ firing it back at the end of the scene.
The second scene is very much hinged around her being blind and has no dialogue from her (partly because she is gagged). She is listening to the approaching footsteps as she hears what the characters say, she realizes she's in a lot trouble.
Aly is a very smart, kind and caring best friend to Marnie. She is the only friend left after the accident with Jasmine, and very much dislikes Marnie's new circle of friends. But she is loyal and only wants what is best for her friend. But she is no pushover despite her kind nature. She is involved in an internet relationship with Nash.
The first scene is about the friendship and her worries about what Marnie is doing, why she's being so careless about JJ, why she's buying drugs from Sam.
The second scene is the determined, smart Aly, where she has to take control as Marnie is half dead from her diabetes, and JJ has run away distraught. Despite being shot in the leg, despite Sam almost killing her, Aly has to rise to the challenge.
Sam is the leading man, and he is a the product of a broken marriage, huge trust issues, and with it, a budding narcissistic psychopath, he can charm you one minute, and slap you the next... all of which he does to his girlfriend Bec. That being said, he genuinely wants to survive the game, and it scares him that he might not.
The first scene is just after the first person has died, Bec shot Will, but is really upset by it. Sam is both pragmatic, caring and cruel, as fear drives him, and he wants to survive, but really doesn't have the mental tools to deal with it.
The second scene is Sam alternating between caring and not caring about Marnie and her friends. One second he's coldly telling Marnie she's going to die, the next he's asking her for a way out so he doesn't have to kill them.
Bec really wants to be loved, she doesn't get much of that at home, but she's chosen the wrong person to give her that... Sam is a narcissistic psychopath. From the very beginning of the film, the flower he's given her is an apology for something... she is a classic victim of abuse, she is so trapped that she can't see a way out, even when help is offered.
The first scene is Bec's worst nightmare, she's killed someone. Startled as they rushed her in an attempt to escape, she shoots him. Despite clearly being devastated by this, Sam is not going to be nice about this, at all.
The second scene is her attempt to stop Sam killing JJ, she tries so hard, but she can't stop him, despite trying to be strong.
Nash is not what he seemed to Aly when they were talking on the internet. He fakes his profile picture, going for someone who looks younger than he is. He cares about her deeply, and in the end, he is actually a really nice guy. He also recognizes Sam for the psycho he is.
The first scene is the first time he sees Aly for real, and Sam pushes him to defend himself, both on his lies and how he feels about Aly. Sam, of course, doesn't believe him.
The second scene is a 3 hander, where we see who Nash truly is, both in his attempts to encourage Bec to stand up to Sam, and his utter grief at Aly's murder.
Will is an average sort of teenager, he likes computer games, he wants to play cool ones, and he's not happy when he gets lumped with the boring jobs. He is no coward though, and takes on the challenge of the game with a desire to protect his friends.
The scene is Will trying to take some control as Marnie is helping Aly. He knows what needs to be done and how to do it, but will he survive when the attackers arrive.
Frankie is awkward. An alternative soul who rarely has the confidence to speak to a girl, and when Frankie does, it's a lot of nervous babble. And the girl Frankie likes is Marnie. However, she doesn't really notice Frankie as anything but a nuisance, and her friends are outright mean. Despite Frankie best efforts, they bully horribly.
The scene is when Frankie finally thinks there’s has a chance, as they got on to the online game they were playing... but it is all utterly horrible, and Frankie ends up in a screaming rage.
Joe is a very loyal father to Frank. He is ex military intelligence, now in cyber security. When his son is horribly bullied, which results in his suicide, Joe decides he has to teach the bullies a lesson. He is driven by grief, he's not insane.
The scene is when Joe confronts Marnie, as he threatens to slit JJ's throat. He is angry, distraught, grieving for his son, and Marnie is the one who he blames most, as she was who his son cared about. But can Marnie convince him not to murder an innocent... just like his son was.
